Spring Break Pt. 2

Day 1 on the boat!

No one specifically requested a recap, but this spring break trip with my family managed to strike a surprisingly balanced mix of relaxation, novelty, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting. After already having my college spring break, when my mom asked if I was able to come on my little sister’s spring break cruise, I figured it wouldn’t kill me to miss two days of class for a free cruise (and time with the family, of course!).

We sailed on the Carnival Paradise, which quickly became our home for the week. The first full day was spent entirely at sea, which set the tone in the best way possible. With nowhere to be and nothing urgent to do, we leaned into the slower pace and claimed lounge chairs by the pool, and eventually ended up at Guy's Burger Joint. It’s one of those places you assume is overhyped until you try it and realize it absolutely earns the reputation. We truly might have eaten here more times than there were days of this cruise.

Two sets of sisters on the way to the stingrays!

Our first port stop was Grand Cayman, and it easily stood out as one of the most unique experiences of the trip. We signed up for a stingray excursion, not fully knowing what to expect beyond “we’ll see them up close.” What we got was far more interactive. First, we snorkeled in 20-foot deep crystal blue water, watching several stingrays glide through the water only inches away. The next stop was crazier. Standing in clear, shallow water, we were surrounded by stingrays gliding past us with surprising quickness. The guides walked us through how to safely interact with them, and before long, we were not only holding them but actually kissing them (something that if I had a nickel for every time I had done it, I would have two nickels). It was equal parts surreal and oddly wholesome, and definitely one of those moments that makes a trip feel distinct from anything else.

Jellyfish sting #1

The next day brought us to Nassau, where we traded calm water for something more adventurous. We went on a scuba diving excursion, which felt like stepping into a completely different environment. I opted to snorkel above the divers due to my inability to equalize. Once underwater, everything slowed down: the noise, the movement, even the sense of time. Surrounded by marine life and coral, it was one of the quieter but more impactful parts of the trip. It’s not often you get to fully disconnect like that, even briefly, and it added a different kind of depth to the overall experience. That is, until I was stung by not one, but two jellyfish. It is a miracle that I was only stung twice, seeing as I caught myself in a group of about 20 jellyfish the size of a half dollar. After some guacamole and fruit on the boat, we went to pick the diver up from the second stop. It was at this moment that the biggest torrential downpour I have ever seen hit us in the middle of the ocean. The rain is so heavy and cold that we were huddling in the bathroom for shelter. We followed it up with margaritas and nachos, though, so all was well.

Me and sissy

Back on the ship, there was a familiar routine that developed naturally. Dinner, where everyone comes back together, sharing stories from the day, and maybe ordering more food than necessary simply because it was an option. Nights ranged from live entertainment to immediately hitting the hay after being drained by the sun and activities from the day.

By the time the trip wrapped up, it had that slightly unreal quality that good vacations tend to have, where everything blends together into a series of highlights. It wasn’t overly extravagant, but that’s part of what made it work. If you’re considering bumming off your little sister’s spring break trip, I highly recommend it.
